Silverwood Stories
A new home for historical dark fantasy fiction.
Introducing Silverwood Stories — a new Substack publication dedicated to my historical fantasy fiction: the Sorrows Hill Stories of Civil War-era Appalachia and the Borderlands stories set in the Wild West of the 1870s. Plus, some other stories inspired by times and places of the past.
Black Moon Journal began as a general home for all my fantasy fiction, which includes both the historical stories and the contemporary noir world of the Moon Road. But as Black Moon Journal has grown and evolved, it’s become pretty clear that these two fictional streams just don’t fit together. And that’s created an identity crisis that makes it confusing for readers.
So Silverwood Stories was born to create a clear separation between the gritty, neo-noir world of Black Moon Journal, and the darker, more mythical stories inspired by war and witchery of the past.
Right now, Silverwood Stories is a collection of completed stories that just don’t fit with the edgy urban vibe of the Moon Road world. But new stories will be coming, along with a long-planned serial involving fae magic, dark sorcery and the aftermath of the Civil War.
What’ll you find there?
The Sorrows Hill Stories — a collection of stories set in the waning days of the American Civil War — a time of witches, malevolent magicians, valiant soldiers and spies, all working at cross purposes as war rages around them.
The Borderlands Stories of the territorial days, featuring the haunted gunslinger Sixkiller and an assortment of other colorful characters including his enigmatic Boss, shapeshifters, witches and many more inspired by the legends and myths of the Old West.
Assorted other stories set in past times.
Not a single story is being deleted or discontinued. They’re all just being collected in their own space for easier reading.
There’s a full index of all the stories in the Reader’s Guide, and you’ll be notified whenever new pieces are published, both there and in the Moon Road Monthly roundup post.
Silverwood Stories is free to read, and you’ll find links here on Black Moon Journal to get you there. But if you do subscribe directly, you’ll get the usual new stories and updates to your inbox.
